The remaining two lived in a mat-hut 80 yarde away from the Station but immediately behind the village.

8. The disposition of the Police on the night of the

raid, and what they did.

One of the two Police who lived in the matched be-

-hind the Station was on duty at the Charge Office: he was shot on

the pier a few yards from the Office.

The second of these two was also on duty on patrol

in the village and seems to have been some way off at the western end: hecame towards the scene of the disturbance and was also shot

dead before reaching the station.

The Constable who lived in the house about 60

yards from the station says that he slept through the whole affair: he did not leave his house: he would certainly have been killed at

once if he had.

The Cons table who lived 170 yards away turned out

half dressed and was shot dead in the street some distance from the Station. The European Sergeant was aroused by a coolie and went towards the Station: apparently his wife was following him. As he reached the main street of the village a villager warned him not to go inside Police Station as it was full of armed robbers. The Sergeant appears to have verified this for himself, then to have handed his wife over to a Chinese servant who took her to the house of a missionary. After thus warning his wife the Sergent who was unarmed again went into the Police Station: the robbers had momentarily disappeared with the arms, and the bodies of the Inlian Constable and of two pirates who were apparently shot by x their courades were lying in front of the Station: firing (probably firing to frighten the villagers) was being freely indul- "ged in: the Sergeant found in his private kit a revolver and a few rounds of munition and just then a large body of pirates came round the eastern side of the station: the Sergeant got on the roof of a house on the western side of the station and attempt. -ed to keep the robbers from taking possession of the launch which
